Really.

Singaporean Is The Spirit Of 21st Century

    Singapore Spirit
Finally, a superhero (or in this case, a superheroine) who proudly wear the Singapore flag! Eat yer heart out, Cap!

Jenny Quantum, "The Spirit Of 21st Century", is the successor of Jenny Sparks, "The Spirit Of 20th Century", who died on December 31st, 1999, at the turn of the century. Born in Singapore immediately after Sparks (a chain-smoking good ol' brit) sacrificed herself in Warren Ellis's final arc "The Outer Dark", Quantum invited troubles of disastrous measures to her hometown (our friendly neighbourhood garden city) when supervillains (aptly named, The Americans) gained knowledge of her existence. Featuring massive level of destruction done to Singapore previously unseen in comic history (anyway we've only seen the Singapore Branch of The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in protest of Magneto's trial in Singapore during the "Avengers VS X-Men" arc...which of course wouldn't have happened at all in reality, mutants or no mutant. Singaporean just ain't cut out for protests), the baddies practically clear up our beloved garden city, of which consequence of the battle was never properly told (can't help but wonder about Singapore's existence in the Wildstorm Universe, though pretty sure that Wildstorm's resident "man of steel" Apollo got raped).

Surely, if "The Spirit Of 20th Century" was appropriately enough, a tough-as-nails English lady, then probably the no-nonsense, kiasu Singaporean Spirit are one to embrace for the 21st Century.

No New Tale To Tell, 28 Years On My Way To Hell

July 19 is the 200th day (201st in leap years) of the year in the Gregorian Calendar, with 165 days remaining.

    On this day...

1692 - Salem Witch Trials: Sarah Good, Sarah Wildes, Elizabeth Howe, Rebbecca Nourse, and Sussanah Martin are hanged for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts.

1862 - Swift-Tuttle Comet is discovered by Horace Tuttle in Massachusetts. It had been independently spotted by Louis Swift in New York three days earlier. It has a 1 in 10,000 chance of colliding with Earth in the year 2126. If this occurs it will probably end civilization.

1947 - Burmese nationalist General Aung San (father of Aung San Suu Kyi) and 6 of his cabinet members were assassinated. The day of his death, 19 July, is celebrated as Martyr's Day (Azani nei) in Myanmar to this day.

1978 - And hell incarnate was thus borne.

1991 - Mike Tyson has sex with 18-year-old beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington in an Indianapolis hotel room for which he was later convicted of rape.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" - RIP Syd Barrett

Syd Barrett, one of the original members of legendary rock group Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60 from complications arising from diabetes.
    More from www.davidgilmour.com :-
It is with great sadness that we report that Syd Barrett, the former lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60.

Syd died peacefully at his home in Cambridge after suffering from complications related to diabetes. There will be a private family funeral.

David Gilmour recently paid tribute to his old friend Syd by including the classic songs Arnold Layne and Dominoes in the set-list for the On An Island tour. He will be much missed, though his influence remains.

The following is an extract from UK trade paper Music Week's daily news page:

Pink Floyd founding member Syd Barrett has died at his Cambridgeshire home from what is believed to be complications from diabetes. The 60-year-old, who suffered a breakdown in the Sixties following his use of LSD, had been a virtual recluse for more than three decades after completely withdrawing from the public spotlight in the early Seventies. He passed away last Friday, although news of his death has today only been announced.

Pink Floyd issued a statement saying, "The band are naturally very upset and sad to learn of Syd Barrett's death. Syd was the guiding light of the early band line-up and leaves a legacy which continues to inspire".

Barrett penned their first two hit singles, Arnold Layne (which reached number 20 in the UK) and See Emily Play (a UK number six), while their first album The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn followed later in 1967. However, their third single Apples And Oranges reflected Barrett's worsening mental state. David Gilmour joined the line-up in February 1968, giving rise to suggestions [that] Barrett would follow the example of Brian Wilson and stop touring with the band to concentrate on his songwriting. Instead, his departure from the band was announced the following April. The last Floyd album he appeared on was their second set, A Saucerful Of Secrets, released in July 1968.

Work then started on his first solo album, The Madcap Laughs, which made it to number 40 in the UK chart in February 1970. A second album, Barrett, followed, but an attempt to return to recording in 1974 ended in failure.

Despite being a recluse since the mid-Seventies, Barrett remained an inspirational figure to many musicians. His legacy was felt in recent solo gigs this year by David Gilmour who in one concert at London's Royal Albert Hall performed Barrett's Arnold Layne with David Bowie during the encore.
